Monument a Colom and Port Vell

The Columbus Monument (Monument a Colom) is in Placa del Portal de la Pau in the Port Vell area.  It was designed for the 1888 Universal Exhibition.  It is 60 metres (200 feet) high and marks the place where Columbus stepped ashore in 1493, after he discovered America.

La Rambla (or Las Ramblas or Les Rambles) runs north of the monument.  There is a floating gangway extending La Rambla southbound into the sea.  Looking back, I could see the Montjuic area on the left and the Museu Maritim on the right.  Montjuic is a beautiful hilly area in Barcelona, the name likely meaning "Mount of the Jews" in medieval Catalan.
